# AI for law firms in Boston, without risking client confidentiality.

Small and mid-sized firms spend a large share of every week on work that is necessary but not billable: intake, first drafts, summarizing discovery, chasing documents, and answering the same client questions. AI can take a real bite out of that work. The catch is that a law firm cannot paste client files into whatever chatbot is popular this month.

Where AI helps a law practice

- Turning intake calls, web forms, and emails into structured matter records and conflict check inputs
- First drafts of engagement letters, demand letters, and routine motions from your own templates and past work
- Summarizing depositions, medical records, contracts, and discovery productions
- Searching your firm's own brief bank and past work product in plain English
- Drafting client status updates so clients hear from you more often with less effort

Confidentiality comes first

Your duty of confidentiality under Rule 1.6 does not pause because a tool is convenient, and the ABA's Formal Opinion 512 makes clear that lawyers using generative AI need to understand how their tools handle client information. That means knowing where data goes, whether it is retained, and whether it is used for training.

We set firms up with AI that fits those obligations. For many firms that means business-grade accounts with contractual data protections and no training on your inputs. For firms with especially sensitive practices, it means a model running on hardware inside your own office, where client files never leave the building. We walk you through the tradeoffs in plain language so the decision is yours.

How JTPCK works with firms

We start by learning how work moves through your firm, from the first phone call to the final invoice. Then we recommend a short list of changes with the biggest payoff, and build the ones you want, connected to the practice management, document, and email systems you already use.

Every engagement includes training for attorneys and staff, written guides, and a clear policy for what can and cannot go into each tool. If you want the background, read [why regulated practices should own their AI](https://jtpck.com/blog/why-regulated-practices-should-own-their-ai) or our page on [on-premise AI](https://jtpck.com/services/on-premise-ai).

For discovery and large case files, our [AI document analysis](https://jtpck.com/services/ai-document-analysis) work applies the same approach we used to [search 4.35 million archival pages](https://jtpck.com/case-studies/ai-archive-search): find every responsive passage, cite the page, and prove the search does not miss known examples.

Common questions

## Can lawyers ethically use AI tools like ChatGPT?

Yes, with care. Bar guidance, including ABA Formal Opinion 512, generally allows it as long as lawyers stay competent with the tool, protect client confidentiality, review the output, and bill fairly. The consumer version of a chatbot is usually not the right setup for client work.

## Will AI replace associates or paralegals at our firm?

That is not how we see small firms using it. The goal is to remove the repetitive work around the legal work, so your people spend more of their time on judgment, advocacy, and clients.

## Can AI search our own past briefs and documents?

Yes. We build retrieval systems that let your team ask questions of your firm's own work product and get answers that cite the underlying documents, so everything can be checked.

## Do you work with firms outside Boston?

We work with firms across Massachusetts and New England, often in person, and remotely with firms elsewhere in the US.
